Connect your EarPods to your iPhone. ^[1] Do so via the headphone jack or Lightning port, depending on the model of EarPods you're using.

Open the Phone app. It's a green app with a white telephone handset icon that's typically located on your home screen.

Make a phone call. Do so by tapping Contacts at the bottom of the screen, tapping a contact, and then tapping call at the top of the screen, or by tapping Keypad at the bottom of the screen, entering a phone number, and tapping the green call button at the bottom of the screen.
- On iPhone 5 or newer, you can also use Siri to make a call with your EarPods ↓.

Press the center of the remote to answer an incoming call. When someone calls you by voice or FaceTime, click the center of the remote on the right EarPods wire once to answer.
- Hold the center of the remote until you hear two beeps to decline a phone call and send it to voicemail.

Press the center of the remote for call waiting. If you're on a call and receive a second incoming call, press the center of the remote once to answer the new call. Press it again to return to the first call.
- Toggle back and forth between calls by pressing the center of the remote.
- Hold the center of the remote for two seconds to end the call you're currently on and switch to the new call.

Adjust the call volume. Using the remote attached to the right EarPods wire, press + to raise the audio volume or - to lower it.
- You can also use the volume buttons to take a photo. Just open the camera app while your headphones are attached and press the volume up or down button to snap a picture.

Press the center of the remote to end a call. Press it once to hang up a call.

Double-click the center of the remote to skip forward. Quickly clicking the center of the remote twice skips to the next song or track.
- Double-click and hold the second click to fast-forward within the track you're listening to. Fast-forward will continue as long as you hold the button and will stop when you release it.

Triple-click the center of the remote to skip backward. Quickly clicking the center of the remote three times skips back to the beginning of the song or track; doing so again skips to the previous track.
- Triple-click and hold the third click to rewind within the track you're listening to. Rewind will continue as long as you hold the button and will stop when you release it.

Two, the headphones could be damaged. Three, the headphones might not be plugged in all the way. Four, it could just be a random malfunction that resolves itself when you restart the phone.
